One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.

Wellness Tip: (Emotional/Physical/Spiritual) One day your life will flash before your eyes.  Make sure it’s worth watching.

You were created on purpose for a purpose.  I believe that the best discovery we can have is when we discover our purpose in life.  The life we can have is so much bigger and better than the life we are already living.  Life is about finding joy in the little things, making an effort to lighten someone else’s load, encouraging those around us, and learning to make time for those things that bring fulfillment and purpose to our lives.  I believe there is more to life than we can even think or imagine at this point.

I recently watched this inspiring video on YouTube about a young man who was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 14.  He knew his days left on earth would be few.  He chose to overcome obstacles and make his life count through music in just a few short years.  Here is one of his songs entitled “Clouds.”

Most of us are not faced with the finality of death at such a young age.  The good part of this was that it forced him to live.  Sometimes we need a push to step out of our comfort zones and live life to the fullest.  When your life flashes before your eyes one day, what do you want to see?  Step out and live life to its fullest because none of us are guaranteed tomorrow.  In the words of a great country song by Tim McGraw, “live like you were dying.”

Mind Your Money.

Wellness Tip: (Financial/Spiritual) Mind Your Money

Money is important.  We all need it to function in life.  I’ve heard it stated that more money makes us more of who we are.  For example, if we are kind and generous, more money affords us the opportunity to do more and give more to others.  If we are selfish and greedy, more money allows us to buy more and get more for ourselves.

Take a few moments and think about winning the lottery.  Let’s say you won a million dollars.  What would you do with it?  I encourage you to write a list of what you would do with it.  Which dollar amounts would be put where?  Would you buy a new house?  Would you buy a new car?  Pay off debts? Donate to local charities? Start a business? Once you have written your list, look it over.  Next to each item, write down whether or not the item is for yourself or someone else.  Is your list geared more towards yourself or others?  I’m not saying it’s wrong to want new things, to pay off debts, or to want to take care of your needs.  We are supposed to take care of ourselves.  I am just making a suggestion to take an overall look at our list and see if there is room for taking care of others in it.

Matthew 6:20-22 tells us “not to store up treasures on earth where it can be destroyed, but to store up treasures in heaven. For where our treasure is, our heart will be also (paraphrased).”   Our treasures in life are those tangible things that we determine valuable.  We must be careful to not allow our earthly treasures to become the best things and place our entire happiness in them, because they are liable to loss and decay.  Priceless treasures like love, grace, peace, and joy cannot be bought or sold.  These things we should hold on to.  Refer back to your list, where is your treasure? Where is your heart?

Determined Through The Details!

Wellness Tip: (Emotional/Mental) Determined Through The Details

Commitment moves past the mind and emotions and goes straight to the will.  The ancient Chinese said that the will of a man is like a cart pulled by two horses; the mind and the emotions.  You must get both horses moving in the same direction to move the cart.  Commitment results when your mind and emotions move forward, whatever the cost (Excerpt from John Maxwell).

Sometimes it is difficult to get our mind and our emotions to go in the same direction.  We may know in our minds what the right thing to do is, and yet our emotions want to have their own way.  In these cases, we have to let go of the emotions that are tied to the decisions and allow ourselves to do what is right.  In other cases, we can emotionally react to a situation without thinking through it first.  I have done this way more than I care to mention.  When we are passionate about a cause or passionate about an individual, we can tend to emotionally react rather than thinking through the situation and developing a proper response.

The next time you are quick to react to something, ask yourself if your mind and your will are going in the same direction.  If your horses are pulling in the same direction, you will move forward in life much faster.   People who are committed tend to be more successful than those who are double minded.  When you make decisions, do you see them through the details, all the way to the end?  Are you committed?

Trust, But Verify!

Wellness Tip:  Trust, But Verify! ~Ronald Reagan

At one time or another, we have all dealt with trust issues.  Whether we are hurt by someone else not fulfilling obligations, or whether someone portrayed themselves to be someone they weren’t, trust is very precious.  It can take years to build up trust in someone, and unfortunately it can be lost in a moment.

I read a blog today by Michael Hyatt regarding trust.  He gives four points on how to rebuild trust.  They are so simple yet profound.  I wanted to share them.   They sound easy, but just try putting one of them to work for a day and see how well you do.

  1. Keep your word. – One of my biggest pet peeves is when people say they will do something and they don’t keep their word.  Keeping our word is a building block to real relationships because it develops dependability.
  2. Tell the truth. – This may seem easy, but I also believe that withholding pertinent information is dishonest and manipulative.  It’s not easy to put ourselves out there, but when trust needs to be rebuilt in a relationship, this is a must!
  3. Be transparent. – This one is probably one of the harder ones for me.  Transparency brings vulnerability.  No one enjoys being vulnerable, however, I have found that there is such a freedom in being transparent.  People often will trust someone who is open, honest, and transparent with them.
  4. Give without any strings attached. – This too seems easy, but when we give something to someone and expect something in return, that is a string that is attached.  Sometimes, we can even keep a “mental score” of what we have done for others and then feel that they now owe us in return.  Giving without expecting anything in return gives us the freedom to leave expectations behind and actually find joy when someone returns the favor, rather than accepting it because it was expected.

Rebuilding trust takes time.   It takes doing the right thing many times over.  Focus on one step at a time and see just how far it takes you.  Trust, but verify that it’s a two way street.

Stand Up, Give Up, Or Back Up!

Wellness Tip: (Mental/Emotional) Stand Up, Give Up, Or Back Up!

Human nature causes us to stand up and fight whenever we are pushed.  I don’t know about you, but sometimes I can fight something to the death just because I have determined in my mind to overcome!  Using wisdom, we can determine when we need to stand up, give up, or back up.  The biggest part of this battle is our mental game.

Standing up means determining in our minds that life will not be sucked out of us and instead we will enjoy life to the fullest.  Sometimes we must stand up against others who want to put us down.  Maybe we have received a report from the doctor and we have to stand up and disagree with it.  Or maybe we have to stand up for the things that we believe in, whether others agree or not.  Sometimes in life, we have to choose to stand up.

Giving up doesn’t necessarily mean that we quit.  Sometimes, some things are not worth fighting for.  Even though we may have mentally set our minds to determine the outcome, things change.  Use wisdom to choose those things that are worth fighting for.  In my life, there are things that God has asked me to let go of and to give up control, only so that He can step in and make it better.  Sometimes to give up means that we let go of control and let God, or others, handle it for us.

Sometimes the answer to a situation is backing up.  It means that we might be in too deep and that our emotions are too entangled to make good decisions.  We have to mentally break away from situations long enough to see a bigger picture.  This is not easy to do, especially when you feel you are right.

The next time life throws something at you, mentally decide if you are going to stand up, give up, or back up.  Mahatma Gandhi said, “I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.”  Determine in your mind the journey that your life will take.

A Heart For Boston And Each Other

Wellness Tip: (Emotional/Spiritual) A Heart For Boston And Each Other

Shortly after the explosions at the Boston Marathon yesterday, I saw RAW footage of hurting people, damaged bodies, fear and shock on people’s faces.  However, I also saw police offices, marathon personnel, paramedics, and even some of the athletes and spectators rush to the aid of those who had been hurt.

It gave me hope to see that in the midst of chaos, there are good and decent people in the world who are willing to sacrifice themselves in an effort to help others.  I have the upmost respect and admiration for our law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, and armed forces for their sacrifice and willingness to help others in times of need.

Did you know that you too can be a hero?  Sure, it may not be as extravagant as a bomb explosion, or rushing to the hospital to donate blood, but there are hurting people around us each and every day.  The people who may work right next to us, the people who are scanning our groceries at the store, or the people who are in line behind us at the post office may be suffering and we might never know.   Human nature is often very good and hiding our hurts.  You may never know what a smile, an encouraging word, a nice gesture, or a helping hand may do for a friend, a co-worker, or even a stranger.

I was delighted to see so many people jump in to assist the wounded at the Boston Marathon, but let’s not wait for a tragedy to strike in order to make the effort to help and encourage those around us.  We can be on the lookout today to be a hero to someone else by holding a door open for someone whose hands are full, to be a listening ear to someone who is weighed down by life’s circumstances, or to smile at those that cross our path today.  Imagine what our world would be like if we all focused more on doing good and having a heart for others…

Financial Increase Comes With Documentation

Wellness Tip: (Financial): Financial Increase comes with documentation.

I have experienced life having money with all my needs met, and I have also experienced life worrying about how my next bill would get paid.  When I had money, I was not the one that was in charge of it.  Therefore, I was given a budget to stick to and I didn’t have to worry about where the rest came from.  After some life circumstances, I had to become the sole breadwinner of my home and had to learn several lessons regarding finances.

The biggest turn around in my life was when my friend and financial professional gave me a free sample of QuickBooks Simple Start Software.  (Now it is offered as a free 30 day trial version).  As I began to actually document every dime I spent, I realized that a lot of my money dwindled away little by little, not on big ticket items, but the little things here and there.  Documenting my expenses helped me to realize where my money was actually going.  At the end of each week, I would check the profit and loss statement to see how I was doing on a week by week basis.  This helped me to stick with my budget.  I would encourage anyone and everyone to start documenting your expenses.  You will be able to see exactly what you spend as well as recognize ways to spend less and keep more in your savings account.  Plus, this free 30 day sample of simple start software gives you the tools and it is a vital investment into your future.  Since it worked for me, I want to pass it along to you.  Happy Documenting!
